A Service Company’s Google Business Profile Guide

A field guide to categories, services, photos, reviews, updates and measurement.

The profile is a living storefront, not a citation you claim once.

The working checklist

  • Ownership and access
  • Name, address or service area
  • Primary and secondary categories
  • Services and attributes
  • Photos and updates
  • Reviews and questions
  • Performance review

Secure ownership

Use an account the business controls, add trusted managers and document access. Keep the name aligned with the real-world business name rather than adding unsupported keywords.

Choose categories carefully

The primary category should describe the main business, not every service it could perform. Secondary categories can cover real additional lines without turning the profile into a keyword list.

Service-area businesses

Follow platform rules for displaying or hiding an address. Add service areas that reflect actual operations; adding distant cities does not create local relevance by itself.

Photos that answer questions

Use current photos of people, vehicles, equipment, work stages and finished projects where permission allows. A smaller library of labeled, representative work is more useful than an unexplained image dump.

Reviews as a process

Ask after a clear success moment. Make the request direct and optional. Respond to feedback with enough specificity to show attention without revealing private customer details.

Maintenance

Check hours, services, links, photos, public questions, edits and performance every month. Record notable changes so a rise or drop in activity has operational context.

Use the guide on your own site

Choose one section, inspect the current customer experience and write down the smallest complete improvement. If you want a second opinion, send the relevant page and the point where the process feels stuck.

A useful first note

Ask Derek about the current version

Select as many areas as you need. A rough answer is enough.
